The Spring 2019 meeting of AzAAPT was a lot of fun at the Pima Air and Space Museum just south of Tucson.
One thing that came up was about a new bill SB1051 regarding physics education. Click here for information (PDF)
If you can contact you legislators and maybe make the following statements it could help:
- Physics is a foundational course for many occupations such as medical fields, engineering and other scientific disciplines.
- Schools often choose to stop offering physics when teachers leave because that is easier than seeking out a certified teacher.
- The new science standards include 28 essential standards over which all high school students will be tested. Six of those are in physics.
- The bill will fund $2000 grants for 100 teachers each year for the next three years. During the last cycle 22% of recipients (33 of 150) indicated they were pursuing physics certification.
Here are some document outlining some fun labs from that we hearda about at the meeting.
